Our Marching Band

The 71st Scout Troop of Kaimakli created its marching band on 1959. The first drums arrived from Greece and the 71st participated for the first time on the 25th of March 1959 parade. That 15 member band was just the beginning and the 71st was about to create its tradition. Since then the 71st Band has been leading the Nicosia Scouts to all parades that took place both in Nicosia and elsewhere. Our band has since 1959 been participating (leading) in all major scouting/non scouting events (morning parades, VIP Welcomings, Holy Friday Epitaph marches etc). The 71st Band has become the pride and joy of the 71st and of the whole of Kaimakli.

The size of the Band grew steadily initially with borrowed musical instruments from various schools. In 1969 some instruments were bought from Frederic School and its size grew to 36; a size that was up to recently astronomical and unreachable.
Later, especially after 1974, our band was somewhat reduced to 27. The Band's activities remained, however, as strong as ever.
Various steps were taken throughout the years to both enhance and enlarge the 71st's pride. On the 28th of October 1992 the Band was at 31 and on the 25th of March 1993 at 40. In 1995 with the recently bought drums the band grew even further to 45.

1999 was a year of a complete band face-lift. The annual parents committee ball gave rise to generous donations from the troop's parents, old Scouts and friends. The 71st Band received 8 new drums, 4 new trumpets and 2 new sets of cymbals. In the 25th of March 1999 the 71st Scout Troop of Kaimakli numbered 48 members ( 8 trumpets , 6 cymbals, 2 Grand-Cashes, 32 Drums).

The Band consists purely of troop 71 scouts aged 11-20. To march and play in the 71st Band is a great honour for every 71st Scout troop member. Following an initial training the ambitious future members have to go through a series of tests and screenings until those chosen are considered good enough to join. A painstaking practice period is then underway until the Band can march in the streets of Nicosia honouring the island's national days and its great tradition.

Throughout the years the band's leader position has been of great importance. Amongst others those were
