ANAMNHSTIKES SEIRESCommemorative IssuesWelcome to the wonderful world of Cyprus Stamps. The Club was started for people who wish to collect stamps and learn more about Cyprus through the commemorative stamps issued by the Cyprus Postal Service. Cyprus's philatelic history starts in 1343 with the first known letter from Ammochostos to Constantinople. From 1846 until 1864, the Austrian Post Office issued several seals from its office in Larnaka. From 1864 the Austrian Post Office used stamps of Lombard and Levant. Around 1871 a Turkish Post Office was established, using Turkish seasonal stamps. In 1878, when Cyprus came under British rule, the two previous Post Offices closed. From 1878 until 1880, the British Post Offices used English stamps. From 1880 to 1881, these were overprinted or surcharged with ÒCYPRUSÓ. From 1881 to 1960, Cyprus stamps featured portraits of the British monarch (Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, King George V, King George VI, Queen Elizabeth II). In 1960, Cyprus became a member of Universal Postal Union and thereafter issued its own stamps. | |||
