other rel = other relatives - uncles, aunts, grandparents

F = father M = mother F+M = no father+no mother Ml = male Fm = female

Seventy five per cent of the patients we studied had family history of hypertension; 17% had hypertensive father only, 33% had hypertensive mother only, 17% had hypertensive father and mother and 8% had hypertensive close relatives only. The frequency of hypertensive siblings and other hypertensive relatives of patients with hypertensive parents is 38% and 37% respectivly.

Conclusions: The genetic contribution of high blood pressure is high in Cyprus. The incidence of hypertension is higher when the mother rather than the father is hypertensive.
